I'm just going to say it, pick a gun and not a knife.
A knife for personal defense is stupid and dangerous. You will get no practice using a knife. That's enough reason there. What's more in order to use it you have to close on your attacker, the opposite of your goal.
It takes one miss to lose it and now your attacker has that knife. Manage to use it and actually land, now you're covered in slippery blood that'll make most people instinctively drop that knife.
Knives are for muggers putting on a show. Get a gun. Small caliber, small enough to carry and conceal. Learn to use it.
And I'm gonna say it too, shoot to kill. If you have to shoot it, you do so with the expectation that it will kill them.
