Profit Is Theft: It Sounds Absurd but Here's Why

https://www.filmsforaction.org/articles/profit-is-theft-it-sounds-absurd-but-heres-why/

| Take a look at this info-graphic. The disparity is absurd, and the 99% does need a raise. But while we're fighting for 15, we need to look beyond raising the minimum wage…

This conflates a lot of issues, namely corporate capitalism with capitalism and profit is theft to name a couple. The rest is off based. You know that when they start calling for equality and democracy in the work place.

There is a constructive way to approach capitalism, and this definitely is not it.

"Profit Is Theft: It Sounds Absurd but Here's Why"

Because it is absurd, at least for any sane definition of the word "profit". A valuable return, a gain, a net income; to call these things "theft" is laughable.

And yes, we do have (some!) socialized costs and privatized gains. Some people look at that and conclude we should socialize the gains; others understand that the proper course is to make and keep costs private. Socializing gains destroys the best incentive to work.

I think the appeal to quit costs externalisation has merit. There is a wealth of studies available, for example https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2212041624000123 or https://seea.un.org/sites/seea.un.org/files/2.2.1_valuation_of_ecosystem_services.pdf

It would be great to see profit/loss statements of public companies adjusted this way.

"profit relies on the systems of coercion"

Sure, but again, only for an insane definition of the word "profit". When my local tamale guy come to my house and I buy tamales from him, he has made a profit. No sane person would claim he was coerced in any way.

And to call "the law of supply and demand" a threat is another absurdity. Do you understand that scarcity is a very real thing?

Wow! That sounds like daoist economics of some sort! Capitalism can be nuanced to better understand it. Traditional capitalism is the destroyer of the proletariat. Commons capitalism spreads wealth throughout the community and raises the standard of living of all. (cont)

Trying to instill democracy, equality, and egalitarianism into an economic system and ridding it of hierarchy prevents us from creating an equitable economic system. Traditional capitalism is our enemy; commons capitalism can accomplish the results for which socialism strives. Commons capitalism can work in the present economy and under present laws. Plus, it works to stop the accumulation of the means of production in fewer and fewer individuals.

No it's not contradictory. Commons Capitalism is an equitable alternative to traditional capitalism. Read about it at #CommonsCapitalismPrimer

If you click on it, again, it will go to the last search where you will find the primer in 8 parts. I wish there were a better way to do that. You can also click on #CommonsCapitalism and find many of my comments on Commons Capitalism.

A rose by any other name...

I went through the thread, started reading Barton Bray's paper.
My first impression is, that you are using capitalist language, to forward deeply anticapitalist ideas. I am going to revisit both texts and put some reasoning behind my statement.

But not today - need to crash soon.

For whatever it's worth, Commons Capitalism does not fit the definition of "socialism." It does fit most of the definitions of "capitalism."

It, also, accomplishes what socialism attempts to do and what workers cooperatives do without all of the problems necessitated in workers coops.

Ironically, worker coops downplay the idea of being competitive in a market economy and concentrate on equality and democracy.
