📢 We refuse to be part of an academic elite that is silent today, only to teach about genocide in 20 years. In the last two weeks, at least 30 Universities in Turtle Island have set up Gaza solidarity camps, including Barnard, Berkeley, MIT and Columbia. (1/n)

❗️The death count in Gaza reached 34150 deaths, 72% of whom were children and women. In the occupied West Bank, 487 people were killed by Israeli settlers and the IDF.

⛺️On April 17, 2024, students established the Gaza Solidarity Encampment on Columbia campus, demanding the university divest from Israel.

👮The encampment was violently dismantled when university president Nemat Shafik authorized the New York City Police Department to storm the campus and conduct mass arrests, but it has now been restored with widespread support. (3/n)

🔖The arrests marked the first time the university has allowed police to suppress campus protests since the 1968 demonstrations against the Vietnam War.

🔇Academic institutions are once again ready to suppress uncomfortable voices, waiting 60 years before presenting themselves as seeds of the very same change those voices are demanding.

📢We proudly stand on the side of faculty members and student organizations (including Jewish Voices for Peace) that refuse to maintain a complicit silence towards the genocide happening in Gaza.

🕊️We support the calls for a ceasefire, the stop to the Rafah invasion, the release of Israeli and Palestinian hostages, and the establishment of a concrete peace process that includes the freedom to self-determination for Palestinian people as well.

🚫Antisemitism shall have no place in our universities and movements. And despite the efforts of some media outlets to tell otherwise, advocating for Palestinian rights is not an act of antisemitism nor an apology of the killing of civilians.

📢"We are witnessing a genocide in real-time. I will always and forever oppose both genocide and terrorism in any form, as I believe all humans should," states Peter Kalmus, member of @SRTurtleIsland

@Scientist Rebellion

No genocide. What did you write about the terroristic attacs of oct. 2023? What did you write about the hostages?

in reply to Samuel Mumm

@samuelmumm deliberately rendering Gaza uninhabitable clearly meets the definition of genocide.

Speaking for myself, I’m glad that 105 hostages were freed through negotiations, and I hope to see more. I’m also glad that three hostages were rescued by the IDF, but since the IDF has killed at least one hostage for every one they rescue, I don’t hope to see more “rescues” with the same success ratio.

@arceuthobium @Scientist Rebellion

I see no genocide. And yes, the IDF and the right-wing up to fasszist government is overacting.

in reply to Samuel Mumm

@samuelmumm how would the situation be different if Israel were trying to render Gaza uninhabitable? Israel’s strategy can be inferred from what it does. Hamas is not their main objective, Gaza’s infrastructure is, has been since 2014 or earlier. Conditions incompatible with life. Genocide.
in reply to Samuel Mumm

@samuelmumm urban warfare is not the same as using human shields. And even if there were two Hamas cots in the basement of one Gaza hospital, how does that justify the obliteration of every other hospital? Do you really believe that 55% of all the structures in Gaza had Hamas in them?
in reply to Samuel Mumm

@samuelmumm every house or hospital that a Hamas member ever set foot in is a terrorist target? al-Qaida used Logan Airport so by your logic that should be blown up.
in reply to arceuthobium

@arceuthobium @Scientist Rebellion

The Hamas is using the complete infrastructure of Gaza. These terrorists use institutions like hospitals and persons as shiels and take the people of Gaza as human shield.

in reply to 8Petros [Atlas Unshrugged]_

@8petros @samuelmumm the Hamas “headquarters” under one hospital (which turned out to be two cots) does not justify bombing that hospital, let alone other hospitals, let alone the summary execution of doctors serving in them.

Let us be real: it does - for some. This is a job for the ICC, and possibly some special tribunal, later.
