Thanks to someone's remark I have recently discovered "The Wandering Inn" series. While it is put together from some well-known elements (both the story and composition), to me it is the first fantasy novel for years that grabbed my attention.
I am at the beginning of Volume 2. Most probably I will get back to you with my impressions.

i have discovered the wandering inn this year. it has taken over my mind lol. completely took me by surprise. i don't even like most fantasy ;) half-way through volume 5 now and dreading the point when i run out of audio recordings...
