There's also the fact that different cultures, even if they share a general culture, can put very, very different values on "bad language" - for instance, acquaintances at the New Yorker spoke of how Maeve Brennan was extremely foul-mouthed; she probably simply used swear words in a way that's quite acceptable in Ireland
