I am autistic. I am what some would call "high functioning" (although this label is deeply ableist).

I am disabled in part because of this. This is a descriptor of a social relation, not a value judgement, a judgement of what I am personally capable of, or an insult. I am living in a society that isn't made for my profile of needs and strengths. Therefore I am at a disadvantage compared to others.

That being said, I would not eliminate my autism for anything. I would rather die than get a "cure".

I have relatively few support needs, but I believe in the right to proper medical care and communication technology for autistics with higher support needs.

I believe our society ignores autistic people with higher support needs, allowing non-autistic people to speak over them. This is unacceptable.

And a cure for autism would essentially amount to either eugenics or severe psychological torture.

Imagine if non-autistic people were somehow "made" to be autistic. I personally would find it unthinkable, and probably you would too.

It would destroy the personality and the unique perspective of that individual, turning them into a shell of their former self. Imagine someone's brain being entirely rewired down to every last synapse. That is what it would take.

A "cure" for autism would be the final victory of totalitarianism.

Being able to radically change someone's neural state like that, if possible, would be the ultimate weapon of a dictator over the human brain.

But it's impossible anyways, probably.

And really, I could talk about how capitalism is inherently hostile to the life of disabled people, or how it kills them indirectly through the de facto demand that every person works themselves to the bone until they die.

But its logically obvious to anyone who is disabled, knows a disabled person, or has read the most basic communist theory. (this is essentially everyone here)
