OK, let's assume that we manage to raise the money to produce (hardware + software) an infokiosk that will provide public and free access to scientific knowledge about the All-Crisis and grassroots suggestions on how to respond to it. What functions should such an infokiosk have, standing, for example, somewhere in a shopping mall or in a railway station waiting room? Please feel free to brainstorm - we throw in any crazy suggestions you like, other people's we don't judge, but we are inspired by them.
One thing I would appreciate would be a “how to take action” section – if the kiosk manages to convey the scale of the problem then getting a how-to might soothe the feelings of doom.
Indeed, capitalism has wrought its own demise and given us the chance to undertake the construction of a new society on the ruins of the old one. It is we who have built the world that the capitalists and their servants have appropriated. It is we who will build the next one – from the remains of the previous one. As we are not afraid of ruins.
Now that we are building a new community, and when we have less and less timespace left for doing stupid things, I invite you – Dear Reader – to talk about decent means leading to decent ends, which TePeWu is now setting for itself. As we free ourselves from the pervasive state-capitalist culture and from the reactivity trap of the traditional anti-system approach, we need a new space of meaning for all our activities. ...despair is not a luxury, it is more a laxative for purging our bullshit. There is a place beyond despair where we can begin again but, trying to avoid despair, people often don’t allow themselves to reach it.
I am (freshly) sixty. I am unlikely to live beyond 2050, when the effects of climate change will become mass-deadly, reaching even rich people in rich countries. I know I will not suffer the worst of it, as it is going to hit our descendants much harder. And there are many of us.
I do not believe I have a real influence on the powers that be, nor they have a real will (let alone a way) to reverse or even stop the collapse of the civilisation as we know it.
But I do not feel powerless, either. I have unique generational experience, knowledge and perspective that may become useful for people who are right now heading into the Great Extincion.
The challenge is how to to make ourselves useful - identify, collect, test and convey what we have to offer. This is our challenge to face.
Today, most of the people do not accept the need to change their lives, to re-learn and re-train themselves. They are either in denial, or they are not yet desperate enough to quit their hope in politicians and industrialists doing the right thing.
When they finally have no other choice, they will be in despair, in panic, with no headspace nor time to (re)invent skills, choose wisely, premeditate instead of reacting.
What we can do for them? We can plan ahead, pool the knowledge, find and test tools, technologies and solutions. When they are needed, we will have them ready for everyone to use.
We are not going to live through the All-crisis anyway. But we can spend the remaining time in good company, doing things interesting and worthy. And when our time comes, we will leave something valuable behind, for people to appreciate, as long as humans exist here.
