@chucker Discord’s Dev documentation always consistently refers to them as “Guilds” and I still think that’s a better term but in their public documentation they decided “Guilds” sounded too much like a gaming term (ignoring the Ren Faire demographic entirely 😼) and latched onto the silly community choice of “server”.

Also technically, they do a lot of data sharding by Guild so server isn’t entirely wrong from a technical perspective if you count data sharding…

Agree. Signal is really great for some things, like if I need something to be end to end secure, but for example, my sister and I have a discord, where we can have sub sections like "Travel plans" "Memes" "Ta Da" "Overthrowing the Patriarchy with Lysistrata" "Crone Island Real Estate Possiblities" "Reading Room" "Research and White Papers" that sort of thing. There's a lot of useful ways to thread, sort, search and categorize things inside Discord. Is it perfect? Good heavens no. Am I aware it is as insecure as any other public website? Sure. I know that going in. Would I put anything incriminating or illegal there? No, because that would be stupid. Just like putting anything like that on any other server you don't own and don't control.

It's been a while since I used Signal, do they even have a way to manage something like a 500k member group?

@nemo the featureset is widely different. it was hardly comparable especially around the time discord became popular and people grew used to it and built communities in it. A discord "server" had wildly different features for organization and moderation than Signal does.

Anyway, did Signal fix their reproducible builds? I use it all the time but the fact that you're not allowed to run your own client and the builds aren't reproducible makes me at least a bit uncomfortable lately.
